The History of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery and the ERAS Society

Ljungqvist O, Young-Fadok T, Demartines N. The History of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery and the ERAS Society. J Laparoendosc Adv Surg Tech A. 2017 Sep;27(9):860-862.

What is already known:

The ERAS society has been incredibly influential in promoting the best possible peri-operative care and to improve recovery through research, education, audit and implementation of evidence-based practice.

What this paper adds:

This short historical overview explains the development of enhanced recovery from a small group of surgeons in European academic centers to the establishment of ERAS Society, now reaching all major continents and involving a wide range of surgical and anesthesia disciplines. It is well worth a read for those who wish to know more about the history of ERAS and the ERAS society.
